What is a
Youth Peer Specialist?
A Youth Peer Specialist is a young adult who provides support, encouragement, and assistance to youth and young adults as they transition to adulthood.
In order to be issued a YPS certification, one must first hold the Certified Peer Specialist certification.
Register now for the following VIRTUAL training dates:
- September 19-20, 2026 (Saturday-Sunday)
- November 18-19, 2026 (Wednesday – Thursday)

NAMI Launches Teen & Young Adult HelpLine
The National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) is proud to introduce the Teen & Young Adult (T&YA) HelpLine: A free nationwide peer-support service providing information, resource referrals, and support to teens and young adults. Their T&YA Specialists are young people who understand what teens and young adults are going through. They are experienced, well-trained, and want to help young people find a way forward. The T&YA Helpline can be reached by phone, text, or chat Monday through Friday, 10:00 a.m. – 10:00 p.m. Eastern.

Under section 630.170, RSMo, individuals who have been found guilty of or pleaded guilty (including those that received a suspended imposition of sentence or a suspended execution of sentence) or nolo contendere to certain specified crimes* are disqualified from working in mental health programs that are operated, licensed, certified, accredited, in possession of deemed status, or funded by the Department of Mental Health. Any person who is disqualified under this section may request an exception to this employment disqualification from the Department of Mental Health Exceptions Committee.
